다학제 융합연구로 해법 모색
Finding solutions for risk factors in the complex hyper-connected society through multidisciplinary convergence research

과학기술 분야 간 융합연구뿐 아니라 초학제 융합연구의 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 정부와 한국연구재단은 2015년부터 ‘융합연구 선도연구센터’ 사업을 추진해 왔다. 한양대학교는 ‘컴퓨테이셔널사회과학연구센터’를 구성하고 사회과학과 데이터과학을 연결한 초학제적 융합연구를 수행하고 있다. 차재혁 센터장을 만나 사업 및 융합연구의 중요성에 대해 들었다.
As the need for trans-disciplinary convergence research as well as convergence research between science technology fields has risen, the government and the National Research Foundation of Korea have been implementing the “Leading Research Center for Convergence Research” project since 2015. Hanyang University has organized the Center for Computational Social Sciences and is conducting trans-disciplinary convergence research, connecting social science and data science. We met with Director Cha Jae-hyuk and talked about the project and importance of convergence research.
사회과학의 진화, ‘컴퓨테이셔널 사회과학’
한양대 컴퓨테이셔널사회과학연구센터(이하 연구센터)는 정보 기술을 활용하여 오늘날의 복잡한 사회현상을 이해하고 분석해 실질적인 정책 대안을 도출하고자 한다. 차재혁 센터장은 전례 없는 초연결사회에서는 예상하지 못한 위험과 갈등이 초래될 수 있다고 강조했다.
“초연결사회에서는 작은 위험이 급속하게 확산하거나 하나의 정책이 사회의 다양한 분야에 의도하지 않은 막대한 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 코로나19와 같은 전염병의 확산 위험 외에도 사회계층 간 상대적 불평등 문제, 사회갈등 등 기존 사회문제들 역시 지리적, 사회적 경계를 넘나들며 확산해 더욱 복잡해지거나 변화를 가속시킬 수 있죠. 본 연구센터는 이러한 초연결사회의 주요 사회문제들에 대응하고자 합니다.”
여기서 중요한 포인트는 다학제 간 협동과 융합이다. 사회과학은 본디 사회현상을 분석하고 사회문제에 대한 대안을 제시하는 학문이다. 하지만 고도화된 초연결사회의 사회문제는 한층 더 복잡하고 난해해졌다. 사회과학 단독으로는 임무를 수행하기에 역부족이다. 그래서 연구센터는 사회과학과 데이터과학의 초학제적 융합연구를 추구한다. 즉, 기존 사회과학 연구의 연역적 접근방법과 실시간으로 축적되는 빅데이터를 활용한 귀납적 해결방법을 결합해 지속적으로 사회현상을 모니터링하고, 나아가 정책적 영향을 예측하는 사회모델링 · 시뮬레이션을 연구하고 있다.
“최근에 등장한 문제의 대부분은 다양한 분야의 핵심 문제들을 포함하고 있을 뿐 아니라 이들이 복잡하게 연결돼 있다는 게 특징입니다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 해당 학문 분야들을 융합한 다학제 간 연구가 꼭 필요합니다. 그래야 당면한 사회문제를 더욱 심층적으로 이해하고 대응할 수 있습니다.”
Evolution of social science, “computational social sciences”
Hanyang University Center for Computational Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as C2S2) aims to understand and analyze today’s complex social phenomena using the information technology and derive practical policy alternatives. Director Cha Jae-hyuk emphasized that unexpected risks and conflicts can arise in this unprecedented hyperconnected society.
“In a hyper-connected society, a small danger can spread rapidly, or one policy can have an unintended, enormous impact on various sectors of society. In addition to the risk of the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19, existing social problems such as inequality between social classes and social conflicts can also spread across geographic and social boundaries, becoming more complex or accelerating changes. C2S2 intends to respond to these major social issues of the hyper-connected society.”
The key point here is cooperation and convergence among different fields. Social science is a study that analyzes social phenomena and suggests alternatives to social problems. However, social problems of an advanced hyper-connected society are more complex and perplexing. It is difficult to carry out the mission through social sciences alone. C2S2 pursues interdisciplinary convergence research between social science and data science. In other words, we are continuously monitoring social phenomena by combining the deductive approach of existing social science research with the inductive solution using big data accumulated in real time, and further researching social modeling and simulation to predict policy impacts.
“Most of the problems that have emerged recently are characterized not only by core problems in various fields, but also by their intricate connections. In order to solve this problem, multidisciplinary research that converges the relevant fields of study is essential. Only then will we be able to better understand and respond to the social problems we face.”

융합연구 선도연구센터 사업의 일환으로 탄생
사실 연구센터 자체도 다학제 간 융합에 의한 탄생물이다. 인문사회과학 분야를 포함한 다학제 간 연구를 진흥하기 위해 추진된 한국연구재단의 ‘융합연구 선도연구센터(이하 CRC)’ 사업에서 시작됐기 때문이다. 연구센터는 2018년 한양대가 CRC 사업에 선정되면서 문을 열었다.
“‘초연결사회 위험관리를 위한 빅데이터 기반 사회 환경 실시간 모니터링 및 사회 시뮬레이션 시스템’을 주제로 2021년까지 연간 10억 원의 연구개발비를 지원받았습니다. 이를 바탕으로 컴퓨테이셔널 사회과학 분야를 선도해 왔습니다. 올해부터 사업 2단계에 진입했어요. 2025년까지 연 20억 원의 연구개발비를 바탕으로 기존 연구를 심화하는 한편, 새로운 분야의 전문가를 추가 영입해 융합연구를 확장해 나갈 계획입니다.”
연구센터는 융합연구의 선도기관답게 부산대학교, 연세대학교, 미국 애리조나주립대학교, 금오공과대학교와도 융합연구를 수행하고 있다. 한양대 내부에서는 컴퓨터소프트웨어학부, 데이터사이언스학부, 사회학과, 행정학과, 미디어커뮤니케이션학과, 산업공학과, 도시공학과, 관광학부 등 8개 학과가 참여하고 있다. 융합연구는 여러 학제가 각각의 문제를 다루는 분업형 연구(multi-disciplinary research), 공통의 문제를 풀어가는 협업 연구(inter-disciplinary research), 여러 학제가 융합된 신규 학제를 만들어 해결방안을 찾는 초학제적 연구(transdisciplinary research)로 나눌 수 있다. 연구센터의 융합연구 방식은 물리적 결합의 분업형 방식을 넘어 사회과학자와 데이터과학자가 화학적 결합을 이루고 있는데, 궁극적으로는 초학제적 연구 단계를 지향한다.
이러한 융합을 통해 그동안 연구센터는 이동성을 중심으로 휠체어 이용 장애인을 포함한 다양한 취약계층의 사회적 배제에 대해 연구한 ‘취약계층의 사회적 배제 연구’, 각종 재난위험 발생 시 정부와 시민사회가 효과적으로 대응하기 위한 구조와 방법을 탐색하는 ‘보건안전 및 재난대응 연구’, 다양한 감정으로 표출되는 잠재된 갈등 요인 분포와 변화 추이를 소셜미디어 빅데이터로 분석해 모니터링 시스템을 구축하는 ‘사회적 불안과 잠재적 갈등 연구’ 등을 수행해왔다. 연구의 성과로 딥러닝 기법을 활용해 코로나19 확진자 수와 사회적 불안 감정 간의 관계를 최초로 확인했으며, 서울시 도시교통실 등 관련 분야 이해관계자 및 전문가가 참석한 정책토론회를 개최해 정책 제언을 하기도 했다.
Created as part of the Leading Convergence Research Center Project
In fact, C2S2 itself is also a product of multidisciplinary convergence. It started with the “Leading Convergence Research Center (hereinafter referred to as CRC)” project by the National Research Foundation of Korea, carried out to promote multidisciplinary research including the humanities and social sciences. C2S2 opened in 2018 when Hanyang University was selected for the CRC project.
“With the theme of ‘big data-based real-time social environment monitoring and social simulation system for risk management in a hyper-connected society,’ we received annual R&D support of KRW 1 billion until 2021 to lead the field of computational social sciences. This year, we entered the second phase of the project. By 2025, we plan to intensify existing research based on the annual R&D grant of KRW 2 billion, while expanding convergence research by recruiting additional experts in new fields.”
As a leading institution in convergence research, C2S2 is also conducting convergence research with Pusan National University, Yonsei University, Arizona State University, and Kumoh National Institute of Technology. From Hanyang University, eight departments are participating: Computer Software, Data Science, Sociology, Public Administration, Media Communication, Industrial Engineering, Urban Engineering, and Tourism. Convergence research can be divided into multi-disciplinary research in which each discipline deals with problems, inter-disciplinary research that resolves common problems, and transdisciplinary research that seeks solutions by creating a new interdisciplinary system that converges different disciplines. C2S2’s convergence research method goes beyond the division of labor of physical combination and forms a 'chemical bond' between social scientists and data scientists, ultimately aiming for a stage of transdisciplinary research.
Through this convergence, C2S2 has been conducting researches such as 'Study about Social Exclusion of Vulnerable Classes,' which has studied the social exclusion of various vulnerable groups, including the disabled in wheelchairs, focusing on mobility, ‘Study on Health Safety and Disaster Response,’ which explores the structures and methods for government and civil society to effectively respond to various disasters; and ‘Study on social anxiety and potential conflicts’ that analyzes the distribution and change of potential conflict factors expressed through various emotions with social media big data to establish a monitoring system. As a result of the research, we have confirmed the relationship between the number of COVID-19 cases and social anxiety for the first time, using the deep learning technique, and held a policy discussion attended by stakeholders and experts in related fields, such as the Seoul Metropolitan City Transportation Office, to give policy suggestions.

In order to respond to the complex and difficult social problems, multidisciplinary cooperation and convergence are essential.
융합, 새로운 사회문제 해법으로 조명
연구센터는 학술적으로도 괄목할 만한 성과를 거뒀다. 2021년 12월까지 게재한 총 63편의 논문 중 55편이 국제 전문학술지에 게재됐으며, 38편이 우수논문에 선정됐다. 학술대회에서 총 79건의 발표를 진행했는데 이 중 32건은 국제학술대회 발표 건이었다. 7건은 우수논문상을 받았다.
연구센터는 학술적 성취를 더욱더 발전시키고, 선도기관다운 영향력을 발휘하기 위해서도 노력하고 있다. 그동안 축적한 주요 데이터와 분석 및 시각화 도구들을 외부 연구자들도 활용할 수 있도록 통합 오픈 플랫폼으로 구축해 공개 중이다. 국제 교류에도 앞장서고 있다.
“본 연구센터는 융합연구 역량을 강화하기 위해 미국 애리조나주립대 등 해외 연구기관과 MOU를 체결하고 국제교류 협력을 주도하고 있습니다. 국제 콘퍼런스 및 국제 학생 세미나 등을 개최하며 교류하고 있죠. 조만간 그간의 국제 워크숍 성과 등을 담은 컴퓨테이셔널 사회과학 분야 영문 저서도 출간할 예정입니다.”
연구원들 간 상호교류의 장이 되는 워크숍은 외부 연구자도 참여할 수 있는 공개 워크숍 형태로 개최해 거대 융합연구 수행의 기반을 구축할 계획이다. 또한 산학강좌, 산업체 기술인력 교육 프로그램 등을 통해 공공기관, 산업체, 대학 간 허브로서의 기능도 강화하고자 한다. 아울러 연구 성과를 지속가능한 정책적 제언으로 발전시킨다는 연구센터의 취지에 맞게 정책협의회를 보다 활성화할 예정이다.
“사회문제는 어떻게 접근하느냐에 따라 다양한 결과로 도출될 수 있습니다. 더 나아가 새로운 연구 방법과 학제가 등장할 수도 있죠. 컴퓨테이셔널사회과학연구센터는 융합연구를 통해 다양한 결과를 도출하고, 그 결과를 논문뿐 아니라 플랫폼으로 공유하며 사회문제 해결을 위한 새로운 지평을 열 것입니다.”
Convergence, highlighted as a new solution to social problems
C2S2 also achieved remarkable achievements academically. Out of a total of 63 papers published by December 2021, a total of 55 were published in international professional journals, and 38 were selected as excellent papers. A total of 79 presentations were made at the conference, of which 32 were at international conferences. Seven papers won the Best Paper Award.
C2S2 is striving to further develop academic achievement and exert its influence as a leading institution. The major data and analysis and visual tools accumulated so far are established as an integrated open platform so that external researchers can also use them. It is also taking the lead in international exchange.
“C2S2 has signed MOUs with overseas research institutes such as Arizona State University in the USA to strengthen convergence research competencies and is leading international exchange and cooperation. We are making interactions by holding international conferences, international student seminars, etc. We plan to publish a book in English in the field of computational social science that contains the results of international workshops so far in the near future.”
The workshops, which serve as a venue for mutual exchange among researchers, are held in the form of an open workshop in which outside researchers can also participate, thereby establishing a foundation for conducting large-scale convergence research. In addition, we plan to strengthen C2S2’s function as a hub among public institutions, industries, and universities through industry-university lectures and industrial technical manpower training programs. In addition, in line with the purpose of C2S2 to develop research outcomes into sustainable policy proposals, the policy council will be further vitalized.
“Social problems can lead to different results depending on how you approach them. Furthermore, new research methods and disciplines may emerge. The Center for Computational Social Science will open new horizons for solving social problems by making various results through convergence research and sharing the results not only through theses, but also in a platform.”
