Transforming Tomorrow and Illuminating the World Through Social Innovation
하나의 물방울은 작고 미약하다. 하지만 하나의 물방울이 수없이 많이 모이면 이내 거대한 폭포가 되고, 땅을 변화시키는 강줄기가 된다. 우리 사회를 움직이는 힘도 마찬가지다. 개인이나 집단 하나의 힘은 약할 수 있으나 이들이 마음을 모으고 힘을 합하면, 우리를 좀먹는 다양한 사회문제를 해결하고 나아가 세상을 변화시킬 수 있다. 특히 대학의 활동이 중요하다. 미래 세대에게 사회혁신과 사회공헌의 DNA를 심을 수 있기 때문이다.
요즘은 기관이나 기업, 대학의 사회적 책임 이행, 사회공헌에 대한 공감대가 깊게 형성돼 있지만 불과 30년 전만 해도 이는 낯선 개념이었다. 또 개개인이 선행을 베풀기 위해 봉사활동을 하는 일은 계속돼 왔으나 이런 활동을 체계적이고 조직적으로 교육하고 관리, 추진하는 일은 극히 드물었다.
1994년 국내 대학 최초로 사회봉사단을 조직한 한양대학교는 다양한 활동을 통해 사회혁신 허브로 자리매김해 왔다. 학생과 교직원, 동문, 지역사회를 유기적으로 연결하고 교육과 봉사, 창업 등을 통해 우리 사회를 바꾸는 일에 힘써왔다. 최근에는 지속가능발전목표(SDGs) 달성을 위한 사회공헌 활동도 적극적으로 지원하고 있다.
사회혁신. 우리 사회를 더 나은 방향으로 이끄는 열정이자 세상을 변화시키는 그 따뜻한 발걸음에 관해 알아본다.
A single water droplet may be small and insignificant. However, when countless numbers of those water droplets gather, they soon transform into a grand waterfall or a river stream that changes the landscape. The forces that drives our society are much the same. While the power of an individual or one group may seem weak by itself, when they come together with a shared purpose, they can address various social issues and ultimately transform the world. The role of universities is especially crucial in this regard, as they can implant the “DNA” of social innovation and contribution to future generations.
Today, there is a strong understanding and consensus over fulfilling social responsibilities and social contribution, within institutions, corporations, and universities. However, just 30 years ago, these were unfamiliar concepts. Although individuals have long engaged in volunteer activities as acts of goodwill, systematic education, management, and promotion of such activities were very rare.
In 1994, Hanyang University became the first university in Korea to organize a social volunteer corps, establishing itself as a hub for social innovation through diverse activities. It has actively connected students, faculty, alumni, and local communities, striving to change our society through education, volunteer services, entrepreneurship, etc. Recently, it has also been actively supporting social contribution activities aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Social innovation. We will learn more about this passion that makes our society better and the warm steps that change the world.
