코로나19 팬데믹으로 전 세계가 혼란에 빠진 가운데 우리나라는 탁월한 K-방역으로 해외의 호평을 받았다. 그 중심에는 신속한 진단으로 감염병의 확산을 막은 ㈜씨젠의 진단키트가 있었다. ㈜씨젠의 천경준 회장(전자공학 66)을 만나 세계적인 감염병 진단 기술력과 활약상에 대해 들었다.

While the whole world is in chaos due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Korea has received favorable reviews from other countries for its effective K-prevention measures. At the center of it was the diagnostic test kit of Seegene inc. that allowed rapid diagnosis and prevention of the disease. We met President Chun Kyung-joon (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Class of ’66) of Seegene inc. and asked about the global disease diagnostic kit technology.

지구촌 뒤덮은 공포의 바이러스

코로나19는 인류의 건강과 일상을 송두리째 바꿔놓았다. 오프라인 만남과 생활은 어느새 많은 부분 온라인으로 전환됐다. 코로나19가 끝난 후에도 이전의 삶으로 일부는 돌아가지 못할 것이라는 전망이다.

“코로나19는 전파력이 매우 높아 순식간에 확산하는 특징이 있습니다. 각 나라에서 방역을 위해 노력하고 있지만, 좀처럼 확산세가 줄어들지 않고 있어요. 다행히 한국은 코로나19 진단시약을 신속히 개발하고 공급해 확진자 판정에 큰 도움을 주었고, 국민도 방역 당국의 지침을 잘 따르고 있어 미국이나 유럽만큼 심각하지는 않습니다.”

천경준 회장은 현재 코로나19 백신과 치료제가 속속 공개되고 있음에도 영국발, 남아공발 등 많은 변이 바이러스가 등장하는 것에 우려를 표했다. 실시간으로 변이와 변종 바이러스의 발생을 모니터링하고 있는 ㈜씨젠은 신속히 변종바이러스 진단키트를 개발하여 세계인의 일상이 하루속히 안정화될 수 있도록 노력하고 있다.

전 세계를 위협하는 감염병을 극복하기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까. 무엇보다 ‘진단’, ‘방역’, ‘치료’, ‘백신’이라는 네 가지 요소가 잘 어우러져야 한다. 그중 진단이 첫 번째다. 질병의 원인이 무엇인지 진단해야 방역대책을 세울 수 있기 때문이다. 아울러 조기 진단으로 환자를 격리하는 것이 전염병의 확산을 막는 지름길임은 말할 나위 없다. 화재는 초기에 진화해야 피해가 적듯이 질병도 초기에 진단해 확산을 막는 것이 효과적이란 뜻이다.

“백신이 나오면 더 이상 진단이 필요하지 않다고 생각하는데 그렇지 않습니다. 독감처럼 백신과 치료제가 존재하더라도 증상의 정확한 진단이 선행되어야 합니다. 또 백신의 대량접종으로 집단면역이 생기기 전까지는 마스크 착용과 손 씻기로 감염을 예방하고, 확진자를 신속히 가려내 질병의 확산을 막아야 합니다.”

A Virus of Fear that Engulfed the World

COVID-19 has completely changed the health and daily life of humanity. The majority of offline meetings and life has now been replaced by its online variant. Many are speculating that, even after the pandemic is over, some parts of our daily lives may not return to the way they once were.

“COVID-19 has the characteristic of high transmissibility, with its ability to spread quickly in a short amount of time. While efforts from many countries have been made in the prevention of its spread, containing the rates of infection are slow to decrease. Fortunately, Korea has quickly developed and supplied COVID-19 diagnostic kits, which have helped in the number of confirmed infected patients. The Korean public has also been willing to follow prevention and quarantine guidelines, which has led to a better situation than in the U.S. and Europe.”

Despite the announcement of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, President Chun Kyungjoon showed concerns over virus mutations from the UK and South Africa. Seegene inc., which monitors the outbreak of virus mutations, is striving to develop another diagnostic kit for virus mutations and bring stability to the lives of the people around the world.

Then, what measures should be taken to overcome a virus that is threatening the entire world? More than anything, these four measures of “diagnosis”, “prevention”, “treatment”, and “vaccination” should all be integrated. The first of these four areas is the diagnosis phase. This is because preventative measures can only be established only after diagnosing the cause of the disease, not to mention the importance of quarantining patients after early diagnosis. Just like how a fire is easier to put out at its earliest stage, it is also effective to diagnose the disease at its earliest stage and stop its spread.

“Many think that diagnosis is no longer needed once vaccines are created, but this is not true. Just like the flu, even when vaccines and treatments have been made, the precise diagnosis of the symptoms must precede. Until herd immunity is formed after mass vaccination, the disease should be prevented by wearing masks and washing hands, and patients should be separated through the correct diagnoses.”

코로나19 팬데믹 속 눈부신 활약

㈜씨젠은 국내 코로나19 발생 초기에 PCR 진단키트를 개발해 K-방역의 시작을 함께했다. 중국에서 코로나19 바이러스에 의한 질병이 집단 발생한 것은 2019년 12월 말이다. ㈜씨젠은 중국발 바이러스의 국내 전염을 우려해 2020년 1월 16일 자체적으로 코로나19 진단시약 개발을 시작했다. 국내에서 첫 코로나19 확진자가 보고된 것이 1월 20일. 감염의 확산을 우려해 신속한 제품 개발을 목표로 전사의 개발역량을 집중한 결과, 코로나19 진단키트 개발을 완료해 2월 7일 ‘유럽체외진단시약인증(CE-IVD)’을 획득한 데 이어 2월 12일 국내 식품의약품안전처(MFDS)의 사용승인 허가를 받았다.

천경준 회장은 개발 당시의 상황을 전쟁이 터진 비상시국에 비유하며 “직원들이 교대 근무를 하며 하루 24시간 제품 개발에 몰두했다”고 회상했다. 3월부터 국내 코로나19 감염자가 대폭 증가하면서 진단키트의 물량이 절대적으로 부족했다. 생산량 급증으로 임직원과 연구원까지 팔을 걷어붙이고 생산을 도왔다. 포장박스를 접고, 라벨을 붙이는 등 백병전을 벌이듯 전 직원이 달라붙어 전투를 벌인 결과, ㈜씨젠은 국내에서 사용한 코로나19 진단키트의 약 70~80%를 공급했을 만큼 국내 확진자 판정에 크게 기여했다.

“한 명의 생명이라도 더 구하기 위해 모든 직원이 애국심을 가지고 일했습니다. 저희의 원칙은 국내 우선 공급입니다. 해외에서 물량을 달라고 아우성쳐도 국내 공급 후 수출했어요. 그럼에도 수출 물량이 워낙 많아 생산량의 95%가 세계 60여 개국에 공급됐습니다. 항공편이 없어 대통령 전용기를 보내 진단키트를 싣고 간 나라도 있어요.”

새로운 바이러스를 찾아내는 진단시약을 가장 빨리, 오류 없이 정확하게 만드는 ㈜씨젠의 역량은 세계적 수준이다. 어느새 ㈜씨젠의 검사 기법은 세계의 표준이 됐다.

“새로운 진단시약 개발은 결국 속도 싸움입니다. 변이 속도보다 개발 속도가 빨라야 합니다. 지난 20년간 분자진단 기술 분야를 연구해 수많은 특허를 보유한 ㈜씨젠은 앞으로 어떤 바이러스가 출현해도 자체 기술로 최단 시간 내에 진단키트를 개발할 수 있는 역량을 갖췄습니다. 인류의 건강을 보호하고 일상을 지킬 수 있도록 돕는 것이 저희의 미션이라고 생각합니다.”

앞선 기술력으로 전 세계에 진단키트를 수출하고 있는 ㈜씨젠은 창립 20주년을 맞은 지난해 매출 1조1000억 원을 달성했다. 최근에는 코로나19뿐만 아니라 독감의 원인이 되는 Flu A, Flu B 등 총 5종의 바이러스를 한 번의 검사로 검출할 수 있는 진단키트를 개발해 식품의약품안전처의 허가를 받았다. 이와 함께 올 1월에는 최근 전 세계적으로 확산하고 있는 영국발, 남아공발, 미국발, 브라질발 변이 바이러스를 한 번에 잡아낼 수 있는 진단키트 개발에 성공했다. 이는 세계 최초로, 전 세계 코로나19 확산 방지에 큰 도움이 될 전망이다.

Crowning Achievements in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Seegene developed the PCR Diagnosis Kit in the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, beginning the K-Prevention Measures. The mass infection of the COVID-19 virus began in China, around the end of December, 2019. Seegene, cautious of the virus’s spread within the country, began developing a COVID-19 diagnostic kit on January 16th, 2020. It was on January 20th that the first Korean patient was reported. By focusing on the development of the kit, in response to the growing concerns over the domestic transmission of the virus, the company completed its COVID-19 Diagnosis Kit and acquired an ‘In-Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Directive (CE-IVD)’ on February 7th, which was approved and authorized for use by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) on February 12th.

President Chun Kyung-joon referred to the development time for the kit as a battle-field, reminiscing that “the employees devoted themselves to the product development around the clock, even enforcing the duty rotation system.” As COVID-19 patients in Korea began to increase, beginning from March, shortages of the diagnosis kits became a problem.

Due to the lack of supply, compared to its demand, all employees including executives and researchers supported its supply. For instance, many employees within the company folded boxes and attached labels, with all employees fighting for the greater good. In the end, Seegene became the company that supplied around 70~80% of the diagnosis kits that were provided around the whole country.

“All employees worked with patriotism to save even one more life. Our principle is providing the supply to the domestic market first. Despite the high demands and requests coming from the global market, we supplied the Korean market first, and then exported the products. Even after taking such measures, the supply quantity itself was so high that 95% of the output was provided to more than 60 countries around the world. Due to the restriction on flight travel, some countries even sent their presidential plane in order to obtain the diagnostic kits.”

Seegene’s competence in making diagnostic kits in the discovery of new viruses the fastest and most accurately is world-class. In fact, Seegene’s diagnostic test method has become the world’s standard.

“Creating a new diagnostic kit is, in the end, a matter of speed. Development speed has to be faster than the speed of virus mutations. For the past 20 years, Seegene has been acquiring many patents by studying the molecular diagnosis technology field, and now has the capacity of being able to develop a new diagnostic kit within the shortest period of time. We believe that it is our mission to protect the health of the humankind and protect their lives from viruses.”

Seegene, which is now exporting the diagnostic kits around the world, reached annual sales of 1.1 trillion won last year. It was the company’s 20th year of establishment. The company recently created a diagnostic kit that can not only detect COVID-19, but also a total of 5 viruses, such as Flu A and Flu B, which cause the flu. The kit also received authorization by the MFDS. In January of this year, the company also succeeded in creating a diagnostic kit that can detect COVID-19 mutations from the UK, South Africa, the U.S., and Brazil at the same time. This kit is the first in the world and is expected to be of great help in the prevention of COVID-19 around the world.

기여하는 삶의 가치

㈜삼성전자, ㈜씨젠 등에 40년 이상 몸담은 천경준 회장은 “기업이 충분한 매출과 이익을 내기 위해서는 경쟁력 있는 제품과 서비스를 개발하고, 좋은 인재를 확보하여, 남보다 앞선 기술과 아이디어를 개발하고, 합리적인 경영과 정도경영을 펼쳐야 한다”며 “기업이 적자 경영을 해선 절대 안 된다”고 강조한다. 회사 하나가 망하면 실업자 양산은 물론 주변 점포와 식당이 문을 닫고, 국가의 세수가 줄어드는 등 엄청난 손실을 주기 때문이다.

기업가의 삶을 살며 천경준 회장은 언제나 ‘기여하는 사람’이 될 것을 가슴 깊이 새겨왔다. 그렇기에 학교 후배나 사회에서 인연을 맺은 선후배, 친구, 동료, 회사 직원들에게도 벤처기업, 중소기업, 지방기업 등 어떤 회사, 어느 자리에 있든지 대한민국의 부가가치를 창출하는 데 도움이 되는 역할을 해달라는 당부를 잊지 않는다.

“모두가 자신의 자리에서 조직과 회사, 나라와 인류에 기여하는 사람이 되길 바랍니다. 내가 회사를 키우겠다는 마음으로 일하는 것이 결국 나와 가족, 나라와 인류에 기여하는 방법입니다. 편하고 안정적인 삶만 찾기보다는, 나라를 성장시킬 수 있는 기업활동에 도전해보길 바랍니다.”

천경준 회장은 이런 자신의 생각이 모교인 한양대학교의 건학이념 ‘사랑의 실천’과도 연결된다고 설명한다. 그는 대한민국 상장 기업 CEO 중 한양대 출신이 가장 많다는 점을 지적하며 우리나라의 산업발전에 가장 많이 기여한 학교 출신이라는 데 큰 자부심을 나타냈다.

‘기여하는 사람’으로서 지난 2000년부터 매년 조금씩 한양대에 기부해온 천경준 회장은 지난해 말 학교 발전기금으로 100억 원을 전달했다. 20여 년간 120억 원이 넘는 기부금을 모교의 발전과 후학 양성을 위해 후원한 것이다. “우수한 인재를 길러내고, 좋은 연구 환경을 제공하는 것이 곧 나라를 성장시키는 방법이기에 결국 대한민국에 기부한 셈”이라고 말하는 천경준 회장. 나라와 인류에 대한 그의 사랑이 한없이 넓고 깊다.

The Value of Life Contributing to the World

President Chun Kyung-joon, who has been part of Samsung Electronics and Seegene for more than 40 years, mentioned that “for a company to create enough sales and profit, it needs to develop competent products and services, secure good human resources, create technologies and ideas faster than others, and establish rational and proper business management,” and emphasized that “a company should never decide on a deficit operation.” Because the bankruptcy of one company not only creates unemployment, but it also leads to great loss, such as the closing of stores, restaurants, and the decreasing of the country’s tax revenue.

Living life as a businessman, President Chun Kyung-joon has been reminding himself by heart to become a ‘contributor.’ In fact, he never forgets to ask those around him, such as the juniors that he met in school or in society, to play a role that contributes to the country, no matter where they currently are in life.

“I wish for everyone to become an individual who will contribute to their organization, company, and country, no matter what role you are taking in that group. Working with the mind to develop the company with your work, is in the end, the way to contribute to yourself, your family, your country, and humanity. Rather than only seeking a life that is comfortable and stable, challenge yourself with a business activity that can develop the country.”

President Chun explains that, with this spirit, his thoughts are also related to the founding principles of Hanyang University’s ‘Love in Deed and Truth.’ He points out the fact that Hanyang University has the greatest number of students who have gone on to become CEOs of listed companies in Korea. He also expressed great pride in being part of the university that has contributed to the industrial development of Korea.

As a ‘contributor,’ President Chun Kyung-joon has been donating to Hanyang University since 2000 and has delivered 10 billion won to the university as a development fund. He has been donating more than 12 billion won to the university for its development and the fostering of junior students. “My contribution to the university, in the end, leads to the contribution of the country since it is used for educating great and talented students, while also providing a comfortable research environment,” President Chun explained. His love for his country and humanity is infinitely broad and deep.
